With the tenth edition of London's busiest design district festival officially over, it gives the DS team an opportunity to reflect upon the festivities that made this year's show the success that it was. With Clerkenwell Design Week 2019 attracting thousands of visitors across the EC1 area there was much to see and do; with the English weather being kind to all (for once!). Year after year Clerkenwell Design Week provides the opportunity to explore the latest additions to the ever-expanding furniture industry, with captivating collections by household names as well as emerging brands on show; with new and old products on display, it provides visitors with an avenue for exploration. Below is our pick of the bunch.
With a year for anniversaries, Bisley were keen not to miss out on the excitement! Celebrations were in order for the first year anniversary of its flagship Darlington Street showroom which saw numerous events take place throughout the week; including the launch of ‘BOB’, the first-all wood product by Bisley and winner of the illustrious Design Guild Mark award, as well as ‘Be’, the new dual aspect, creative solution that produces perfect combinations for a connected workplace.
Clerkenwell Design Week arrived just in the nick of time for the official unveiling of Flokk’s redesigned UK showroom. The new showroom previews an even wider range of the brands of Flokk, with a bigger collection of Offecct designs than ever before, in an array of bright, bold fabrics and configurations. The layout was designed specifically to represent the changing agile workplace. The space also saw the influential design quarterly Disegno Magazine host a thought-provoking discussion between industry leaders on sustainable design; topics ranged from how we frame sustainability to the business case for sustainability, and the nature of designing around sustainability.
With sustainability an ever apparent trend not only in the workplace but in society in general, Humanscale scaled their CDW appearance to be sustainability-themed. The opportunity to discuss everything Humanscale as well as sustainable design was made possible in a number of locations. With the Smart Ocean taking centre stage in terms of products, the week also saw Humanscale play host to a programme of events designed to educate and stimulate discussion. There were guest appearances from BBC’s Jo Ruxton, who delivered the talk ‘Plastic Through the Camera Lens’, as well as Martin Brown who gave an ‘Introduction to the Living Product Challenge and Declare Labels’, with both talks touching upon various pertinent issues with a focus towards design and sustainability.
Rejuvenate, Immersion, Tranquility, Interaction. 4 adjectives you’d associate with the future of the workplace?
Clerkenwell Design Week saw OrangeBox present an updated Smart Working landscape with an emphasis on how the workspaces landscape can address the challenges and opportunities of today - with the needs of 2020 and beyond an integral part to the thinking. This was done in collaboration with Scott Brownrigg Interior Design to bring the project ‘Dream Unboxed’ to life. The breathtaking four-story Northampton Road showroom was the perfect location to showcase several new products framed by this updated Smartworking narrative, with Being, Acron and Lapwing taking centre stage. There were also further additions to Coppice as well as significant evolutions to the Air3 platform.
Pledge Edge Design:
‘We think more creatively when sitting relaxed’.
It was fantastic to visit Great Sutton Street showrooms that accommodate Edge Design; the inspirational and creatively focused division of Pledge Office Chairs. With a range of products on display, it was difficult not to be immersed with its industry-leading designs with the Cicero range a favourite of the DS team. The additions to the Fifteen environments range also provided the opportunity to explore some of the industry's best soft seating products.
The Senator Group:
Senator, Allermuir, Torasen. It's fair to say there was plenty happening around Charterhouse Square. With a daily breakfast hosted by the Mixology Manufacturer of the year in 2018, Senator was a great place to start the day with conversations about how ‘great design lasts forever’ never too far and few between. With a seating range that features the likes of the award-winning I-Workchair, Circo and the Ad-Lib range there were plenty of comfortable seats to relax in. A busy drinks reception on Wednesday evening caught the headlines as the highly acclaimed design event celebrated the tenth anniversary of the sustainability project ‘Sustain’. The project has made noticeable changes throughout the years with highlights being; the 6000 tonnes of recycled cardboard with 100,000 trees saved in the process (the equivalent weight of 5000 African Elephants!) as well as the project saving 7.5 million kilograms of waste going to landfill (the equivalent weight of 1000 London double-decker buses).
